A tight scramble in the heat of Barcelona
It is absolute chaos at the top. Just 0.057s separated the three fastest cars in FP2, and honestly, the sheer tightness of the field is enough to make any racing fan sweat. Lando Norris set the pace for McLaren, but George Russell and Mercedes are clearly right there with him, separated by a heartbreakingly small nine thousandths of a second in the afternoon session.
While the factory teams are locked in this high-speed dance, others are struggling to find a rhythm. Max Verstappen and Red Bull seem to be in a difficult spot, with the Dutchman noting a lack of grip and balance that left him off the front-runners' pace. Meanwhile, Ferrari is having a mixed outing, with Lewis Hamilton facing a particularly frustrating session complicated by a front wing issue that left him slipping and sliding across the tarmac.
It was a fascinating day for the young guns, too, with Leonardo Fornaroli taking an impressive fifth in his first official F1 session for McLaren. As the teams head into the night, the focus is entirely on tyre degradation and managing the intense heat, but one thing is certain: nobody is comfortable, and that is exactly how it should be.
