A wave of rookies takes over Friday practice in Barcelona
It is that time of the season again, and frankly, I love it. Seven teams are clearing space in their cockpits this Friday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, giving the next generation a proper run in F1 machinery. Regulations demand every full-time driver yield two practice sessions a year to a rookie, and Barcelona—a track these youngsters know inside out from their junior careers—is the perfect theater for it.
Fred Vesti steps into the Mercedes seat for the session, while Dino Beganovic takes the wheel at Ferrari, arriving fresh off a podium in Monaco. Over at McLaren, 21-year-old Leonardo Fornaroli will get his first taste of the 2026-gen cars, and Ayumu Iwasa returns to the Red Bull fold for his sixth FP1 outing. Rounding out the grid, Luke Browning will pilot the Williams, Paul Aron continues his unique arrangement to drive for Audi, and American Colton Herta makes his highly-anticipated F1 debut with Cadillac.
"This opportunity will be taken very seriously," says Herta, and he is surely not alone in that feeling. It is a massive pressure cooker, especially for the likes of Vesti, who must now support the championship lead of his teammate. It is wild to see these fresh faces given the keys to such sophisticated beasts.
