Antonelli seizes pole position in British Grand Prix Qualifying
It is becoming a familiar, almost frightening sight: Kimi Antonelli at the top of the timesheets. The Mercedes driver secured his fifth pole position of the season during a windy and unpredictable Qualifying session for the British Grand Prix. In a display of pure concentration, Antonelli managed to clock a 1m 28.111s on his final run, holding off the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to cement his place at the front of the grid.
Silverstone proved to be a difficult, gusty beast for the entire field. The wind made the cars unpredictable, a challenge that Antonelli navigated with composure. He was the first to head out for his final run, an unusual position that initially left the young Italian feeling a bit stressed. Yet, he handled it with remarkable precision. As he put it, “The last lap was very tidy, I have to be honest. It all came together.”
Behind him, the battle was fierce. Charles Leclerc managed to split the two Mercedes men, taking P2 with a lap 0.175s slower than Antonelli’s. Lewis Hamilton secured third place at his home event, while George Russell, who had been running strongly earlier in the session, eventually fell back to fourth. It was a day where fine margins decided everything, evidenced by Gabriel Bortoleto’s heartbreak in the Audi, missing a spot in Q3 by a mere 0.032s.
Further back, the picture was chaotic. Red Bull saw Isack Hadjar lead their charge in fifth, while a clearly frustrated Max Verstappen could only manage seventh in his RB22. The McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri took sixth and eighth, respectively, with the Racing Bulls of Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson rounding out the top ten. For some, the session was a total disaster, with Franco Colapinto’s excursion at Becketts causing a yellow flag and ending his day early in 19th.
As Sunday looms, the grid is set. The stewards have a busy evening ahead, with investigations looming for Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, and Arvid Lindblad. With the wind set to play a part and the pack bunched tightly, we are left waiting to see if Antonelli can convert this pace into a victory.
