Brent Crews steps in for Christopher Bell at Naval Base Coronado

It was an unusual sight at the Anduril 250 on Sunday when Brent Crews climbed into the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to take over for Christopher Bell. The driver swap happened during the first caution of the race, triggered on Lap 12 when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. stalled his No. 47 Hyak Motorsports Chevrolet on track.

Bell, who is currently managing a fractured wrist sustained two weeks ago at Michigan International Speedway, started the race from 37th position. After completing a lap around the 3.4-mile street course, he navigated the No. 20 machine down a closed pit road to execute the change. It was a milestone for 18-year-old Crews, who was making his first laps in NASCAR Cup Series competition.

Unfortunately, the mission was short-lived. A mechanical failure silenced the No. 20 on Lap 30, cutting the debut of Crews brutally short. Bell, serving as the driver of record, was credited with a 39th-place finish and one point.
