Christian Lundgaard pulls off an impossible charge at Road America
Christian Lundgaard must be wondering how on earth he pulled this off. After making contact with Scott Dixon on the opening lap and limping to the pits with a damaged wing and a flat tire, the Arrow McLaren driver found himself at the very back of the 25-car field. Yet, through a mix of tactical brilliance from his team and raw pace, he managed to cross the line first at the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. Even the winner seemed shocked, asking his team over the radio, “How did we do that?”
It was a race of pure mechanical heartbreak for Marcus Armstrong, who looked set for a maiden win in his Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian machine. Leading by 2.787 seconds with only five laps remaining, his car simply lost power on Lap 53, handing the lead to Lundgaard. The final restart was equally dramatic, ending under caution after Will Power and Graham Rahal tangled in a desperate fight for third, sending Rahal’s Honda into the gravel.
David Malukas secured second for Team Penske, while Power took third. Despite a drive-through penalty for pit lane speeding, series leader Alex Palou managed a remarkable recovery to finish fifth for Chip Ganassi Racing. Lundgaard’s climb from the back is one for the books, a stunning turnaround for a driver who admitted his team had been on the “struggle bus” all weekend.
