Christopher Bell lines up at Pocono despite 63 G-force crash
It is honestly difficult to fathom that Christopher Bell is here at Pocono Raceway this weekend. Just six days ago, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver suffered a 63 G-force impact at Michigan International Speedway after Chase Elliott lost control of his No. 9 Chevrolet. The sight of Bell’s No. 20 Toyota hitting the SAFER barrier so violently that the steel deformed is something that stays with you. And yet, there he was on Saturday, smiling, with nothing more than a cast on his left wrist to show for it.
Bell was quick to deflect the credit, praising the safety engineering of the Next Gen chassis and the head-foam containment system for his survival. While the fracture will keep him in a cast for roughly six weeks, he is determined to drive. He admitted that shifting at Pocono will be a challenge, and he is already worried about the physical toll of upcoming road courses, but his commitment to run the full 400 miles is absolute. Should the pain prove too much, Brandon Jones is standing by to take over the cockpit.
There is a real humanity to this story, especially regarding the relationship between the two drivers involved. Chase Elliott, who still carries the weight of the incident, reached out to Bell multiple times this week, and Bell expressed genuine appreciation for that concern. It is a stark reminder of the risks these guys take every time they pull onto the track. Seeing Bell participate in practice and qualify 22nd is nothing short of incredible.
