Coronado chaos and the rise of Corey Heim
The inaugural race at the Qualcomm Circuit in Southern California was supposed to be a masterclass for polesitter Shane van Gisbergen. Instead, the Trackhouse Racing driver found his No. 97 Chevrolet caught in a brutal Lap 32 multicar wreck that also collected Connor Zilisch and Austin Hill. In the ensuing carnage, 23XI Racing driver Corey Heim seized the opportunity, fighting his way to a stunning first career Cup Series victory in only his 13th start.
While the front of the field was turned upside down, others found redemption on the streets of the base. Zane Smith managed a clean fourth-place finish for Front Row Motorsports, finally putting his recent run of bad luck behind him. AJ Allmendinger reminded everyone why he is a road-course specialist, piloting his Kaulig Racing Chevrolet to a fifth-place finish, while Ryan Preece broke a miserable streak with a solid 11th-place run for RFK Racing.
It was a dark weekend for other heavy hitters. Brad Keselowski saw his race unravel after contact with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. left him in 34th, marking his fourth consecutive finish of 34th or worse. Meanwhile, Christopher Bell’s recovery from a wrist injury took a turn for the worse; after starting 37th, his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota—driven by substitute Brent Crews—succumbed to a mechanical issue on Lap 30. For van Gisbergen, the disappointment is heavy, as his Chase qualification odds have plummeted from 67% to 20.2% following the DNF.
