Denny Hamlin strikes for 50th pole at Michigan
It was a masterclass in final-minute tension at Michigan International Speedway. Denny Hamlin, the very last man to take to the track, snatched the Busch Light Pole Award for Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 with a lap of 195.117 mph. It is his 50th career pole, a stunning milestone for the 45-year-old veteran. In the process, he broke the heart of Michigan’s own Carson Hocevar, who held the top spot until the final moments of the session.
The margin was razor-thin: just 0.018 seconds separated Hamlin’s No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota from the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet driven by the 23-year-old Hocevar. Hamlin, who admitted his car was "a handful" and pushed to the absolute limit, showed a touch of grace afterward, walking over to console the local hero on pit road.
Toyota dominated the session, locking out four of the top-five starting positions. Tyler Reddick, driving the No. 45 Toyota co-owned by Hamlin and Michael Jordan, slotted into third, followed by JGR teammates Ty Gibbs and Chase Briscoe. While Ford maintains a historically massive lead in Michigan victories, the current form belongs to the Toyota camp, who have claimed the last two races at this track.
