Elfyn Evans dominates FORUM8 Rally Japan to extend championship lead

Elfyn Evans secured a commanding victory at the FORUM8 Rally Japan, leading from the second stage on Friday to finish 12.8 seconds ahead of teammate Sébastien Ogier. The Welshman’s performance across the 20 asphalt stages in Aichi and Gifu marked his second win of the season and his 50th career podium, extending his lead in the drivers’ championship to 20 points over Takamoto Katsuta.

Toyota dominated the event, with Sami Pajari taking third place and local favorite Katsuta finishing fourth. While Oliver Solberg pressured the leaders early on, a Saturday crash ended his challenge, allowing Ogier to consolidate second place despite his early time losses in Isegami’s Tunnel. Hyundai’s Adrien Fourmaux finished as the top non-Toyota entry in fifth.

Despite his disappointment in missing the podium, Katsuta showed pace during the final day, supported by Solberg’s strong finish as he secured maximum bonus points on Sunday. The result significantly boosts Toyota's lead in the manufacturers' standings as the WRC season prepares for a transition to gravel fixtures, beginning with the EKO Acropolis Rally Greece next month.
