Esapekka Lappi embraces refreshed outlook during WRC return

Esapekka Lappi delivered a strong performance in his first top-tier WRC start of the 2026 season, securing sixth overall at the snow-covered event in Sweden. Despite the Hyundai Motorsport team struggling to match the pace set by Toyota Gazoo Racing, the Finn stood out as the manufacturer's fastest driver for much of the rally. He ultimately finished behind team-mate Adrien Fourmaux, having conceded the position to assist the Frenchman’s championship efforts.

Now 35 and competing on a part-time basis, Lappi notes that his perspective on the sport has shifted significantly. Following a year spent competing in the Finnish Rally Championship, he feels he has regained his passion for driving, moving away from the career-focused pressure that once dominated his approach. He describes his current role as an opportunity to enjoy the performance of Rally1 machinery without the burden of securing long-term factory seats.

This event also marked Lappi’s debut in the WRC with co-driver Enni Mälkönen. The Finn praised Mälkönen's positive demeanor, noting that her enthusiasm, particularly during high-speed, technical sections, has significantly brightened the atmosphere inside the cockpit of the i20 N Rally1.
