Fernando Alonso keeps his options open beyond 2026
It is not every day that a legend like Fernando Alonso reminds us that even at 44, the future remains a complex puzzle. With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, all eyes are on the significant upgrade package Aston Martin is bringing to the Hungarian Grand Prix. While many expect this to be the turning point for his career path, the man himself is being quite clear: the performance of these new parts is only a small piece of a much larger picture.
Alonso has been open about the team's struggles, calling this the most challenging start to a campaign yet for the squad. He is looking for more than just a quick fix on the chassis; he specifically mentioned that progress on the engine side is essential to his decision-making process. As he put it, "It will not only be how fast we are in Hungary, there are more things on the table."
Beyond the raw speed of his current machine, the Spaniard is weighing his personal happiness and his desire to eventually tackle other challenges like the Dakar Rally or endurance racing. He noted that he does not want to wait until he is 60 to chase those dreams. For now, he remains committed to Aston Martin, but the final decision on whether he stays will wait until the summer break.
