Formula 2 unveils new car for 2027 and beyond

Here's the thing: Formula 2 just pulled the cover off its brand-new machine for the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons, and it happened right there in the paddock at the Monza. This championship remains the ultimate proving ground where drivers put their talent on display with the ambition of grabbing a full-time seat in Formula 1. Just look at recent graduates like current standings leader , Red Bull’s , and Racing Bulls’ .

Now, this new beast fully embraces that exact role. It brings redesigned front and rear wings alongside an on-board starter designed to further evolve the championship, prepare racers for the top tier, and encourage closer racing. That new on-board starter is a brilliant touch that will simplify the operational side for the teams while letting drivers restart their car after spinning or stalling on track.

Smartly, the series aligned this design with the current F1 philosophy while keeping the current Dallara chassis to manage costs. It will continue running on advanced sustainable fuel supplied by Aramco, paired with Pirelli tyres. Plus, the 2027 car stays accessible to a wide range of drivers because specifications for braking performance, steering effort, and cockpit ergonomics remain unchanged.

Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1, pointed out just how vital this machine is. "Formula 2 is the ultimate proving ground for the next generation of Formula 1 drivers, where the very best young talent competes wheel-to-wheel and develops the skills needed to reach the pinnacle of motorsport," he said. He added that "this new car is another important step forward, combining innovation, safety and closer racing while maintaining the level playing field that allows drivers to showcase their ability."

Echoing those thoughts, FIA Formula 2 Championship CEO Bruno Michel explained the core priorities behind the project. "When working on this new car, our first goal was to ensure it remains the perfect tool to prepare drivers for F1," he stated. Michel also emphasized that keeping the current chassis while redesigning the front and rear wings allows them to keep costs managed while bringing the design closer to the look of an F1 car and enhancing the F2 car’s ability to deliver close racing. "Our fans expect the F2 races to be highly entertaining and safe, and this new kit will deliver exactly that."
