George Russell aims for home success while still taming his Mercedes

It is a strange, delicate position for George Russell. Fresh off a hard-fought victory at the Red Bull Ring—his first since the season opener in Australia—the 28-year-old is finding his rhythm again. Yet, heading into his home race at the British Grand Prix, he is remarkably candid about his process: while his self-belief is absolute, he is still working to "gain confidence of how to get the car in the sweet spot."

It hasn't been an easy road. After a dismal stretch that included a retirement in Canada and a non-score in Monaco, Russell currently sits 40 points behind his Mercedes team mate Kimi Antonelli in the standings. He admits that unlike last year, where he felt an instinctive understanding of the W17, this season has required a complete recalibration of his driving style to match the machine. Thankfully, he feels the lessons from his recent podium in Barcelona-Catalunya and his win in Austria are finally clicking into place.

Silverstone is next, and for a driver who attended his first Formula 1 race there at 10 years old, the emotional stakes are naturally high. However, Russell is keeping his head down. "The game plan is just to be as fast as possible," he says. He is choosing to treat the home crowd’s energy as a boost rather than a burden, insisting that once the helmet goes on, it is strictly business as usual.
