George Russell puzzled by pace deficit at Silverstone

George Russell ended his Sprint Qualifying session at the British Grand Prix feeling truly lost. The Mercedes driver managed only P5, finishing with a time just under four tenths away from his teammate. It is a frustrating reality for a pilot who usually finds a significant step forward when the pressure of the final qualifying segment hits, yet today that magic simply did not happen.

“It’s kind of the story of the year, to be honest – always on the back foot,” Russell admitted. Despite the W17 feeling decent on track and the high-speed sections showing real promise, the clock tells a different story. He noted that the car did not feel bad to drive, which only deepens the mystery of why his relative lap time remains absent.

He was also left very surprised by the performance of Ferrari, who seem to have overcome their struggles from Austria to hold the upper hand throughout the day. Watching Ferrari shine while he sits in P5 is difficult for him to reconcile, as he feels the current state of affairs is "not quite making sense." With the more important day ahead, the pressure is on the team to decode these strange gaps.
