George Russell returns to form with stunning pole at Barcelona-Catalunya
It is hard not to admire a drive like the one George Russell just delivered. After a rough spell in Monaco, the Mercedes man returned to his absolute best, smashing out a 1m 14.679s lap that proved simply impossible for the rest of the field to beat. It is his third pole of the season, and honestly, the way he handled the car made it look like a walk in the park.
The drama unfolded behind him in a proper Qualifying fight. Lewis Hamilton—yes, in his Ferrari—snatched a brilliant second place with a last-gasp effort, pushing the championship leader Kimi Antonelli back into third. It is a massive result for Hamilton, while for Antonelli, it marks his lowest qualifying finish of the year. Lando Norris followed in fourth, leading the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar.
Things went sideways for Charles Leclerc, who looked like he had the pace to fight at the front all session long. His day ended in the barriers at Turn 4 early in Q3, leaving him without a time and starting from P10. It was a brutal end to an afternoon that had promised so much for the Ferrari driver.
"Obviously the last few races, for numerous reasons haven’t quite been on our side, but I came into this weekend with just a clean slate, felt good and, yeah, just good to be on pole," Russell said after the session. It is clear the machine is working, and with a front-row lockout for Mercedes, Sunday is shaping up to be an absolute thriller.
