Hamilton fights hard but cannot stop Antonelli at Silverstone
It was a wild afternoon at Silverstone where Lewis Hamilton, despite starting from pole position by the razor-thin margin of 0.011s, had to concede the top step of the podium in Saturday's Sprint. The Ferrari driver put up a masterclass in defensive driving, keeping Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli behind him in the early stages, but the machine ahead of him was simply too much to handle for long.
On lap 8, the inevitable happened. Antonelli, the current championship leader, made his move and surged into the lead. By the time the checkered flag dropped, the young Italian had pulled away to win by 2.745s. It was a clinical performance from the Mercedes pilot, who claimed his maiden Sprint victory.
Hamilton was exhausted but defiant after stepping out of the car. He admitted that the headwind down the back straight played right into his rival’s hands. "I was pushing as hard as I could and gave it absolutely everything," Hamilton remarked, clearly respectful of the pace shown by the winner. Energy management was the deciding factor, with the Ferrari driver struggling to contain Antonelli once the Mercedes moved into Overtake mode and gained extra deployment throughout the lap.
Despite missing out on a home victory—a venue where he holds the record with nine British Grand Prix wins—Hamilton was surprisingly upbeat about his P2 finish. He noted that being right in the fight was far more than he expected from the weekend. It is clear the work to close the gap to the front is ongoing, and while they aren't quite there yet, the progress is undeniable.
Further down the field, it was a tougher outing for Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari man finished the Sprint in fifth place after a poor start forced him to play catch-up. Leclerc was candid about the struggle, noting that while the car felt okay after the initial drop in positions, he is still searching for comfort. He remains optimistic, however, pointing to a potential philosophical shift in the car’s setup that he hopes will better suit his driving style for the remainder of the weekend.
