Hulkenberg's Barcelona retirement triggered by unusual gravel incident

Nico Hulkenberg experienced an unexpected retirement during the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, a premature end attributed to a highly unusual circumstance. The German driver was running inside the points positions, battling with Liam Lawson for ninth place, when the incident occurred.

On lap 28, Lawson ran wide at Turn 12, kicking up gravel. A portion of this debris struck Hulkenberg's Audi, activating the car's emergency safety fire switch. This triggered a full system shutdown, forcing Hulkenberg to bring the car into the pits and retire.

Hulkenberg described the situation as "very unusual and unfortunate," explaining that the gravel strike caused a "complete shutdown of the system." Despite the frustrating end, he noted the team's strong pace throughout the weekend and felt they were in a good position to score points. Audi Racing Director Allan McNish echoed the sentiment, highlighting the automatic safety function activation. The team's performance in Barcelona, however, did not translate into points, with teammate Gabriel Bortoleto finishing just outside the points in 11th.

Hulkenberg stated that the outcome was a result of "bad luck rather than a performance or reliability issue," emphasizing the promising pace shown by the team.
