Josh McErlean anticipates variety in Croatia WRC return
The FIA World Rally Championship returns to asphalt surfaces next week with a move to a new base in the port city of Rijeka for the Croatia Rally. The event, which has relocated from Zagreb, features a refreshed itinerary where only three stages from the 2024 route have been retained. M-Sport-Ford driver Josh McErlean believes the mix of traditional, bumpy Croatian roads and smoother, track-like tests will create a demanding and unpredictable environment for competitors.
Weather remains a primary concern for teams following reports of snow during pre-event testing, leading tyre supplier Hankook to provide non-studded winter options. Furthermore, because Croatia is linked to the upcoming Rally Islas Canarias, teams must maintain the same differential settings for both events. McErlean noted that this technical constraint requires a compromise in vehicle setup, though he remains confident in the progress his team has made on Tarmac since the season opener in Monte Carlo.
After a difficult start to his campaign, including retirements in Monte Carlo and Kenya, McErlean is eager for a clean performance. The driver views the revised route as an opportunity to level the playing field, as the lack of familiarity with the new stages minimizes the advantage held by experienced competitors. Looking ahead, the Irishman remains optimistic that his recent run of misfortune is nearing an end.
