Here is the thing about racing: sometimes going for glory leaves you staring at the wall. That is exactly what happened to Layne Riggs in the closing laps at Kansas Speedway, where a brilliant shot at victory turned into a painful 19th-place finish after he smacked the wall.
That late-race drama handed Kaden Honeycutt a dominating victory. Scoring 75 of a possible 76 points, Honeycutt seized absolute control of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Chase presented by Mobil 1. For Riggs, it marked devastating issues for the second consecutive race, dropping him down to second place in the standings.
Now, the gap stands at 37 points. Honeycutt arrives at Friday’s Ecosave 200 looking to expand his lead, while Riggs attempts to right his ship. The schedule moves on quickly, and the stakes are brutally high.
Reflecting on the heartbreak, Riggs pointed straight to his own ambition. “I just went for it there at the end,” Riggs said, noting that his machine was fighting uphill through rough pit stops and other issues all day. “Should have been just fine with chalking up a second-place finish instead of trying to go for the win. But at the same time, the team (Front Row Motorsports) pays me to go win races. And that’s what we did.” He added that he must be smarter in the long run and keep his head about him instead of focusing only on three or four laps.
Despite the disaster, a silver lining exists for the driver of the Front Row Motorsports entry. Through just two races, Riggs and Honeycutt have already created massive separation from the rest of the Chase field. Behind them, third-place Chandler Smith, who is Riggs’ teammate, trails Honeycutt by 71 points, while fourth-place Gio Ruggiero sits 72 points back. The battle for the crown is narrowing down to a fierce duel.
