Well, the meme is actually becoming reality. According to Motorsport.com, Kasey Kahne is staging a stunning return to full-time NASCAR racing, stepping into the No. 77 truck for Spire Motorsports for the 2027 season.
It is a wild turnaround for a driver who last appeared in a Cup Series race at the Southern 500 back in 2018, before a severe health issue involving dangerously high heart rates and body temperatures forced him out of the sport. Since stepping away from the grueling 38-race Cup calendar, Kahne has tested himself in shorter events, including Sprint Car racing and an O’Reilly Series race last year at Rockingham Speedway. That willingness to dip his toes back into shorter races caught the eye of Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson during the Knoxville Nationals this year, leading directly to a surprisingly quick pitch and an even quicker 'yes.'
For Kahne, the physical toll of long races was the absolute dealbreaker in 2018, but the 25-race Truck Series schedule—filled with shorter events and night races—presents a completely different physical landscape. He has made it clear that he has zero health concerns about the move and hasn't even needed to consult his doctors. Modern comfort options to keep drivers cool through the summer heat will also help compared to his final days in Cup. Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson and driver Carson Hocevar originally hashed out the idea during the 360 Knoxville Nationals the week before the 410 Knoxville Nationals, landing on Kahne to build a genuinely cool story without any suffocating championship expectations hanging over the garage.
There will, however, be a machine adjustment. The current NASCAR Truck Series is vastly different from the machinery Kahne briefly moonlighted in over a decade ago, featuring much more downforce and far less power than what he is used to. He has already chatted with Chase Elliott about the engine package following Elliott's run at Wilkesboro, but the true test will come once he finally gets behind the wheel.
Beyond his full-time commitments with Spire, Kahne plans to keep slinging dirt in Sprint Cars, aiming for a schedule similar to his current year running his own Kasey Kahne Racing equipment, alongside appearances that previously included filling in for Anthony Macri at Macri Motorsports. For now, it is a one-year deal built on making memories, having a good time, and seeing where the road takes them.
