Katsuta secures historic maiden WRC win at Safari Rally Kenya
Takamoto Katsuta has etched his name into the history books by becoming the first Japanese driver to win a World Rally Championship round since 1992. His breakthrough victory in Kenya arrived on his 94th start, marking a significant milestone at the same venue where he achieved his first career podium in 2021.
The event was defined by the brutal nature of the Safari terrain, which forced major shake-ups throughout the field. A Toyota Gazoo Racing 1-2-3 lockout dissolved on Saturday when championship leader Elfyn Evans suffered suspension failure, while Oliver Solberg and Sébastien Ogier both encountered terminal mechanical issues. Katsuta inherited a comfortable lead and navigated the final stages with caution to cross the finish line 27.4 seconds ahead of the competition.
Following his win, Katsuta expressed gratitude toward his team and co-driver Aaron Johnston for their unwavering support throughout his career. Kenyan President William Ruto was on hand to present the trophy at the conclusion of the event.
Adrien Fourmaux navigated Hyundai’s overheating struggles to secure second place, while Robert Virves claimed fifth overall and the WRC2 victory. Despite retiring from the lead battle on Saturday, Elfyn Evans salvaged points on Sunday to maintain his narrow advantage in the drivers’ standings as the series prepares to move to the asphalt stages of the Croatia Rally next month.
