Kimi Antonelli seizes his first sprint victory at Silverstone

It was a masterful display of patience and timing at the British Grand Prix. Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, spent the opening stages of the Silverstone Sprint stuck in second place, even dropping to third briefly after a squeeze into the first corner from Lewis Hamilton and an overtake by McLaren’s Lando Norris. The 19-year-old managed to reclaim his spot quickly, but the real work was just beginning as he set his sights on the Ferrari ahead.

For the first eight laps, the tension was palpable. Antonelli kept the pressure glued to the rear of Lewis Hamilton's machine, biding his time and waiting for the right moment to strike. He finally found his opening at Stowe on Lap 8. By deploying his Boost function, Antonelli surged past to take the lead. From there, he was untouchable, settling into a rhythm that kept him comfortably out of range for the remainder of the 100km dash.

Reflecting on the scrap, the young Italian was honest about the intensity of the duel: “It was a very fun first 10 laps with Lewis. We were both pushing very hard. Once I got into Overtake mode, I knew my chance was coming.” He noted that he had tested the waters earlier, getting close into Brooklands, but wisely chose to wait when Hamilton deployed his own boost. “Then, going into Stowe, I used everything I had and was able to overtake,” he added.

This victory is a significant statement in his championship campaign. Antonelli now sits on 179 points, extending his lead over his teammate George Russell to 43 points. Despite the momentum, he remains remarkably grounded about the challenges ahead. He acknowledges that the competition from Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, and his own teammate is far from over. As he put it, the team simply needs to keep raising the bar to maintain their current form.
