Kimi Antonelli shows nerves of steel at Silverstone

It is not often you see a driver in the zone as Kimi Antonelli currently is, yet even he feels the weight of the moment. The Mercedes driver secured his fifth P1 start of the season at the British Grand Prix, but the path to that front-row slot was not without its internal friction. After setting a provisional pole, Antonelli found himself tasked with heading out first for the final run, a scenario that clearly unsettled the 19-year-old as he probed his Race Engineer, Pete Bonnington, for answers.

“I was a bit stressed because I never really like going first for the last run,” Antonelli admitted after the session. It is a revealing look at the psychology of a racer who, despite his standing, remains human enough to feel the pressure of the final push. The conditions were far from a walk in the park, either. The Italian noted that the track was incredibly tricky due to unpredictable, gusty winds that demanded total focus from the cockpit.

Yet, when the clock started ticking, the noise faded away. He delivered a stunning lap of 1m 28.111s, finding a level of precision that his rivals could not touch. It was, in his own words, a “very tidy” effort where everything simply clicked. The car remained largely unchanged between the Sprint and Qualifying, with the team focusing only on adjustments to the differential and brake migration to find that extra bit of pace.

Now, the challenge shifts to the race, where he will have a pair of Ferraris breathing down his neck. Charles Leclerc is set to start in P2, with his teammate Lewis Hamilton directly behind in third. Antonelli is under no illusions about the tactical battle ahead, acknowledging that the Ferrari duo will likely work together to dismantle his lead. Still, he remains confident, relying on the strong pace his machine displayed during the Sprint to carry him through to Sunday.
