Kyle kirkwood dominates for historic, star-spangled victory in D.C.

Here's the thing about racing around the National Mall: it demands absolute perfection, and Kyle Kirkwood delivered exactly that. Sunday's Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. marked the first-ever motor race around the iconic monuments and buildings of the nation's capital city, and Kirkwood completely owned the venue to take a stunning victory.

Driving the No. 27 Sam's Club Honda, the Florida native put on a masterclass. At times during the 147-lap, 250-mile race on the seven-turn, 1.7-mile temporary street circuit, Kirkwood held an advantage of upward of 15 seconds. A late caution bunched the field for a restart and ultimately reduced his winning margin to 3.0906 seconds over Christian Lundgaard in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, but that gap was entirely deceptive given how thoroughly the winner had controlled the afternoon.

It was a massive day for Andretti Global, locking out three of the top four positions. Behind Kirkwood and Lundgaard, Will Power brought the No. 26 TWG AI Honda home in third place, while Marcus Ericsson took fourth in the No. 28 Acura Honda as part of a race held as a vital part of the celebration of America's 250th birthday. Kyffin Simpson rounded out the top five aboard the No. 8 Sunoco Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Now, the championship picture has suddenly gotten very interesting. Alex Palou entered the weekend holding a 133-point advantage in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES standings, but a disastrous 20th-place finish for the points leader in the No. 10 OpenAI Chip Ganassi Racing Honda changes everything. With just three races remaining in the season, Kirkwood's brilliant drive has slashed that deficit down to 91 points.
