Lando Norris claims podium in surprise Silverstone sprint performance
It is not often you see Lando Norris genuinely surprised by his own pace, but that is exactly what happened at the Silverstone Sprint. Starting from sixth on the grid, the McLaren driver launched his way through the field to secure a stunning third place in the 100km dash. Finishing behind Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton, Norris admitted that crossing the line in the top three was far beyond his expectations for the day.
For the reigning World Champion, the reality of the current season is that McLaren simply is not as fast as Mercedes or Ferrari. Because of this, he maintains that any finish in the top five is a massive result for the team. "Any time we finish in the top four, it means we’ve just done a very good job," Norris noted, clearly satisfied with how the team managed the short race.
The drive itself was an absolute masterclass in tactical awareness. Norris made a violent, beautiful start that gained him almost all of his positions immediately. He even managed to briefly snatch second place from Kimi Antonelli on the opening lap. However, Norris showed the maturity of a true veteran by choosing not to engage in a prolonged scrap with the Italian. Recognizing that Antonelli possessed superior speed, he let him pass rather than wasting energy and time in a fight he could not win.
It was not entirely smooth sailing, as Norris also had to defend his position against George Russell during the race. While the result was impressive, Norris is not getting carried away. He knows the team still has work to do before Qualifying and Sunday's main event to address the small areas where they are still lacking performance compared to their rivals.
On the other side of the garage, it was a more difficult Saturday for Oscar Piastri. The McLaren driver finished seventh, trailing his teammate by almost eight seconds. Piastri described the opening lap as chaotic and admitted that once he settled into a rhythm, his pace just wasn't where it needed to be. Progress is clearly needed for the rest of the weekend, but for now, Norris has given the home crowd exactly what they wanted to see.
