Lewis Hamilton reflects on his eye-opening first trip to Monaco

It is difficult to imagine, but there was a time when the glamour of Monaco was entirely alien to Lewis Hamilton. Before the three Grand Prix victories and his life as a resident in the Principality, Hamilton was just a 13-year-old kid from Stevenage newly signed by Mercedes and McLaren, experiencing a world that seemed like something out of a film.

His introduction to this lifestyle came through Nico Rosberg, who Hamilton met while karting in Italy back in 1998. The two young racers formed a friendship, leading to an invitation that would change Hamilton’s perspective forever. He recalls flying on a private jet belonging to Keke Rosberg—a shock to the young driver—and arriving to find a helicopter waiting on the tarmac. It was, as he put it, "like James Bond stuff."

Seeing the apartment where Rosberg’s parents lived, and realizing he now resides in that very same building today, remains a defining memory. Hamilton notes that this experience was truly eye-opening, providing a clear vision of what he might achieve through his career. As he says, "if you can't see it, sometimes it's really hard to believe it."
