Madrid's La Monumental corner promises spectacular F1 challenge
Formula 1 is set to feature a new, highly ambitious corner known as La Monumental at the upcoming Madring circuit. Turn 12 is designed to combine the intensity of a high-speed turn with the scale of a stadium, aiming to become a memorable fixture in Grand Prix racing.
The 270-degree curve, named after a famous Spanish bullring, will feature significant banking and be surrounded by large spectator areas, including extensive hospitality spaces and the largest F1 Fan Zone. Construction on the 5.4km circuit, which will host the Spanish Grand Prix from 11-13 September, is ongoing.
Unlike other banked corners in modern F1, such as those at Zandvoort which have progressive banking, La Monumental is designed to be taken at very high speeds. Drivers are expected to enter the turn between 180-200 kph and maintain acceleration throughout its 550-metre length. The banking's gradient will not exceed 24% (13.5 degrees), though it is less steep than Zandvoort's 18 degrees. Williams driver Carlos Sainz noted that the corner is expected to be flat out, potentially creating overtaking opportunities and allowing for strategic positioning on the track.
The circuit itself is divided into two distinct sections. The southern part utilizes public roads and has a street-circuit feel, while the northern section passes through the Valdebebas area, incorporating inclines and descents. This new circuit marks the return of the Spanish Grand Prix to Madrid for the first time in 45 years.
