Max Verstappen makes his first move into driver development with Dries van Langendonck
It is not often that a four-time World Champion decides to step into the world of driver management, but that is exactly what happened during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend. Max Verstappen has officially thrown his support behind 15-year-old Belgian driver Dries van Langendonck, marking the first time the Verstappen Racing squad has actively backed a talent in the lower rungs of single-seater racing. This is a massive endorsement for the youngster, and frankly, when a driver of Verstappen’s caliber says someone is special, you sit up and take notice.
Dries van Langendonck is already a known commodity within the McLaren stable, having joined their driver development programme in 2024 at the age of 13. His resume is already packed with serious achievement, starting with his 2023 World Junior Karting title. He made an immediate splash upon entering the world of single-seaters, becoming the youngest winner of a British Formula 4 race with a debut victory at Donington Park. He followed that up by winning the Iberia-based Formula Winter Series, and he currently leads the British F4 standings for the 2026 season with four race wins under his belt.
Verstappen’s decision to get involved is grounded in his belief that Van Langendonck possesses a unique quality. As Verstappen noted ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, "Dries has been a big talent for a long time already in karting and I think you can spot quite quickly when someone is a little bit more special than someone else." The plan, according to Verstappen, is to work in tandem with McLaren to guide the teenager’s career path. "He wants to get to F1 and I'm just trying to make sure that will happen in the future. It's an exciting project to be part of," the champion added.
For the young Belgian, the support is as much about the resources as it is about the mentorship. Van Langendonck described Verstappen as a long-time idol, noting that the new arrangement provides him with critical assets like additional simulator time at Verstappen’s personal facility. He remains firmly embedded in the McLaren development programme, viewing this dual support system as the key to unlocking his potential.
The ultimate goal for Van Langendonck is singular: Formula 1, and eventually, the World Championship. He acknowledges that the road ahead is long and demanding, but with the backing of both McLaren and the Verstappen Racing squad, the path is undoubtedly clearer.
