McLaren left searching for answers after Monaco electrical fault

It was a frantic, frustrating afternoon for McLaren at the Monaco Grand Prix. During the early stages of FP2, Lando Norris’s MCL40 simply shut down at the Nouvelle Chicane, leaving the reigning World Champion sidelined while the rest of the field pounded around the streets. It is a massive blow for the team, especially as they celebrate their 1000th Grand Prix weekend.

Rob Marshall, Chief Technical Officer and Chief Designer at McLaren, confirmed it was an electrical problem that killed the machine, though the precise cause remains a mystery. "We’ve not had enough time to go through the data and find out exactly what’s gone wrong yet," Marshall admitted. With the team still scouring the data, the pressure is on to ensure lightning doesn't strike twice.

With Norris stuck in the garage, Oscar Piastri carried the load alone for most of the session. He finished seventh, roughly a second off the pace of the Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes cars. Piastri was blunt about the challenge, noting, "It’s been a tough day for us, for sure." The Woking-based squad has a long night ahead, with Marshall pointing to tyre temperature or early-lap struggles as key areas needing a fix before qualifying.
