McLaren left struggling for pace in Monaco qualifying

It was a grim Saturday for McLaren in Monaco. Oscar Piastri was left to face the cold reality that the team was destined for seventh place no matter what adjustments they made to the car. As the frontrunners from Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari found significant time in Q3, the McLaren pair was left stranded, with Piastri finishing over half a second off Kimi Antonelli’s pole-setting lap. It is a tough pill to swallow for a team celebrating their 1000th Grand Prix.

Lando Norris fared little better, ending the session in eighth place alongside his teammate. After a small lock-up into T10, Norris admitted that even his best effort wouldn't have bridged the gap to their rivals. While he felt he had extracted nearly everything the machine had to offer early in the session, the lack of grip and confidence compared to the rest of the field was impossible to ignore. For a team that expected to be on the back foot, the reality of being so far off the pace has left them searching for answers.
