Mercedes anticipate tough competition at Austrian Grand Prix

Mercedes is anticipating a significant challenge at the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend, despite topping the timesheets in opening practice. The team's Deputy Team Principal, Bradley Lord, stated that they "have a fight on our hands" for pole position and victory. Lord pointed to McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari as potential threats, noting that rivals like Ferrari showed strong pace in Barcelona after a seemingly less competitive Friday, and Red Bull has introduced aerodynamic updates. McLaren's consistent performance in recent races, especially in warmer conditions, also indicates they will be competitive. During Friday practice at the Red Bull Ring, Kimi Antonelli set the fastest lap for Mercedes, with George Russell sixth. Russell experienced a disrupted second practice session due to work on his car. He expressed surprise at McLaren's pace in FP2, particularly their single-lap and race performance, suggesting that Mercedes' strong showing in FP1 might have been partly due to rivals encountering issues. Russell highlighted that McLaren's speed was a "real surprise."
