Motorsport community mourns the loss of Morrie Chandler

Morrie Chandler, a pivotal figure in both New Zealand and international motorsport, has died at 85. Recognized for his lifelong service, he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1997 for his extensive contributions to the sport.

Chandler began his career in club-level hillclimbs before joining the executive board of Motorsport New Zealand. He was vital in securing the country's status on the WRC calendar during the 1970s and 1980s. His global impact grew significantly in 1983 when he joined the FIA WRC Commission, eventually rising to become the commission president and an FIA Vice-President for Sport. He was also a key architect in the growth of the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship.

WRC Promoter Senior Event Director Simon Larkin paid tribute to Chandler, describing him as a "titan" of the industry who led with both strength and passion. Beyond his administrative roles, Chandler was honored as President d’Honneur of MotorSport New Zealand in 1998 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Halberg Awards.
