Oliver Solberg forced to retire from Rally Islas Canarias after crash
Oliver Solberg's challenge for victory at Rally Islas Canarias ended on the penultimate day during SS17, Ingenio - Valsequillo 2. The Toyota Gazoo Racing driver impacted an armco barrier, resulting in terminal damage to his GR Yaris Rally1. Both Solberg and co-driver Elliott Edmondson emerged from the incident without injury.
Prior to the crash, Solberg had been locked in a tight battle with teammate Sébastien Ogier. After trailing the leader by 3.8 seconds entering the final day, Solberg had successfully narrowed the gap to 2.2 seconds following strong performances on SS15 and SS16, where he proved fastest in changing conditions.
The retirement of the Swedish driver has significantly altered the leaderboard. With his closest rival out of contention, Sébastien Ogier maintains the lead, while Elfyn Evans advances to second place. Sami Pajari moves into the final podium position as a result of the incident.
