Palmer suggests Ferrari prioritize Hamilton over Leclerc for 2026 title bid

Jolyon Palmer, a former Formula 1 driver and current analyst, has proposed that Scuderia Ferrari should consider prioritizing Lewis Hamilton's 2026 championship aspirations over those of Charles Leclerc. Palmer suggests that if Ferrari is to have a realistic chance of securing their first drivers' title since 2007, they may need to ask Leclerc to support Hamilton's campaign.

Hamilton has recently found renewed form, securing a victory in Barcelona and finding himself within striking distance of the championship lead, currently held by Kimi Antonelli. In contrast, Leclerc is significantly behind, having struggled to score points in recent races. Palmer argues that Leclerc's substantial points deficit makes it improbable for him to clinch the title, thus opening the door for Ferrari to strategically back Hamilton.

Palmer referenced historical examples, such as Fernando Alonso's near-championship charge with Ferrari in 2010, where team support was crucial. He believes that a fully supported Leclerc could act as a strong wingman, taking crucial points away from rival Mercedes, thereby aiding Hamilton's chances. Despite acknowledging Leclerc's talent and potential for future championships, Palmer asserts that the current circumstances and points gap necessitate a tactical shift for Ferrari's immediate title hopes.
