Rick Treadway, Indianapolis 500 veteran, dies at 56
It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of Rick Treadway. The Indiana native, aged 56, died on May 30 following a motorcycle accident.
Treadway is remembered for his start in the 2002 Indianapolis 500, where he drove the No. 5 Sprint/Kyocera Wireless/Airlink Enterprises G Force/Chevrolet for his father's team, Treadway Racing. He started 17th in that race and served as a teammate to Arie Luyendyk, though his day ended early after an incident in Turn 3 on Lap 90 that also involved Tony Kanaan. He ultimately placed 29th.
His career in the INDYCAR SERIES spanned 11 races across the 2001 and 2002 seasons, during which he drove for Treadway-Hubbard Racing and Treadway Racing. While his debut came at Kentucky Speedway, his best result was a fifth-place finish at the 2001 season finale at Texas Motor Speedway. Before reaching the top level, he cut his teeth in Formula 2000, USAC Silver Crown, the National Midget Series, and SCCA competition. Outside of racing, he was a commercial pilot and a flight instructor.
