Here is some brilliant news for endurance racing fans: Robert Shwartzman is heading back to the FIA World Endurance Championship grid. Team Peugeot TotalEnergies has signed the former race-winner to complete its Hypercar driver sextet for next season, marking his first appearance in the series since 2024.
Shwartzman's path to this seat has been quite a journey. After building an impressive single-seater resume—including taking the FIA Formula 3 Championship crown in 2019, finishing as the runner-up in the FIA Formula 2 Championship two years later, and earning test and reserve driver roles for Ferrari and Sauber in Formula 1—he stepped into endurance racing in 2023 with the GT World Challenge.
Endurance racing is something I’ve really missed over the past two seasons, and I’m thrilled to be joining Team Peugeot TotalEnergies.
That same year, he really turned heads during the annual FIA WEC Rookie Test in Bahrain by setting the fastest lap by more than half-a-second in a Ferrari 499P. That performance led to a full-time campaign the following year with the privately-entered AF Corse Hypercar squad. He hit the ground running with a fourth-place finish on his series debut, before taking a victory alongside team-mates Robert Kubica and Yifei Ye at Texas’ Circuit of The Americas.
After that, the 26-year-old headed to the United States for 2025 to race in the IndyCar Series, where he made major headlines by becoming the first rookie to secure pole position for the legendary Indianapolis 500 in more than four decades. Now, he is coming back to sports cars. He is set to jump into several test sessions behind the wheel of the Peugeot 9X8 over the coming months ahead of his full-time arrival in the French manufacturer’s six-strong line-up next season.
“I’m extremely happy to be returning to the FIA World Endurance Championship after my time racing in the United States,” Shwartzman enthused. “Endurance racing is something I’ve really missed over the past two seasons, and I’m thrilled to be joining Team Peugeot TotalEnergies.”
