Russell acknowledges Hamilton and Ferrari as championship threats
George Russell has identified Lewis Hamilton and the Ferrari team as major threats to his championship aspirations. Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, has recently secured back-to-back second-place finishes in Canada and Monaco, followed by a victory in Barcelona, marking his first win with the Italian squad. This strong run has seen him overtake Russell in the Drivers' Championship standings.
Russell noted Hamilton's resurgence, stating, "It’s great to see Lewis back doing what he does best." He emphasized that Hamilton's performance demonstrates the complexity of Formula 1 and how various factors must align for a driver and team to succeed. "For sure he is a big threat. Ferrari are a huge threat," Russell commented, while also acknowledging championship leader Kimi Antonelli remains the primary target.
The Mercedes driver expressed excitement rather than nervousness about facing strong competition, whether from within his own team or rival drivers. He believes multiple contenders make for a more engaging and competitive racing environment, similar to his karting days.
Antonelli, who leads the championship, also addressed the competition, listing Russell, Hamilton, and the potential for reliability issues as factors he is aware of. He stressed the importance of maximizing every opportunity, citing his own mechanical retirement in Barcelona as a missed chance for valuable points. Antonelli also referenced Max Verstappen's past comeback from a significant points deficit as a reason to remain consistently focused.
