Russell leads the way as rookies flood Barcelona FP1

George Russell put his Mercedes at the top of the charts in Spain, clocking a 1m 16.363s to lead the way at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. It was a fascinating session to watch, largely because seven rookie drivers were thrown into the mix to satisfy F1’s mandate for testing new talent. Oscar Piastri took second for McLaren, while Charles Leclerc rounded out the top three for Ferrari.

Things were far from smooth for everyone on track. Carlos Sainz dealt with an early technical headache in the pit lane, and Alex Albon’s Williams suffered an electrical failure that sidelined reserve driver Luke Browning for the entire hour. Meanwhile, the rookies were pushing their limits; Gabriel Bortoleto had a trip to the gravel in his Audi, and debutant Colton Herta had a wild moment through the Turn 7/8 chicane in his Cadillac. Even Max Verstappen, who briefly held the top spot on softs, struggled with the balance of his Red Bull, finishing the session in fourth.

By the time the chequered flag fell, the leaderboard held firm with Russell, Piastri, and Leclerc leading the pack. It was a proper shake-up with names like Leonardo Fornaroli and Paul Aron finding their feet in the midfield, while the rest of the field focused on gathering data for the weekend ahead.
