Solberg reflects on missed Canarias victory after retirement

Oliver Solberg's challenge for victory at Rally Islas Canarias concluded prematurely following an accident on the final day. Entering the closing stages, the 24-year-old had trimmed his deficit to Toyota Gazoo Racing teammate Sébastien Ogier to just 2.2 seconds. However, an incident on SS17 saw his GR Yaris Rally1 make contact with a bank after misjudging a jump, causing sufficient damage to force an immediate withdrawal from the event.

Despite the disappointing finish, Solberg expressed pride in his performance, noting that the opportunity to compete directly against a nine-time world champion like Ogier represented a significant career milestone. He acknowledged that while his pace was strong, the evolving road conditions and a minor miscalculation in a high-speed section led to the crash. Both Solberg and co-driver Elliott Edmondson emerged from the car without injury.

Looking ahead, Solberg intends to maintain his aggressive approach to competition while focusing on refining the minor details of his driving. Following the retirement, he sits fourth in the championship standings, 33 points adrift of leader Elfyn Evans. The driver remains optimistic about future asphalt outings, aiming to apply the lessons learned in Spain to his upcoming appearances.
