Solberg reflects on progress despite Rally Japan incident

Oliver Solberg’s campaign at Rally Japan came to a premature end on Stage 10 when he clipped a telegraph pole while navigating Mt. Kasagi 2. The incident, which caused terminal damage to the right-rear suspension of his GR Yaris, occurred while the driver was in a strong position, having shaved 10.6 seconds off the lead held by teammate Elfyn Evans.

While critics, including Sébastien Ogier, suggested the pace was unsustainable, Solberg maintained that he was driving within typical competitive parameters. He acknowledged, however, that he is grappling with the nuances of high-level asphalt rallying, noting that he must refine how he interprets information from his gravel crew to better judge difficult sections of the road.

Despite the setback, Solberg demonstrated his resilience by returning to the field on Sunday to dominate the Super Sunday standings and secure maximum points on the Wolf Power Stage. He currently holds third in the overall championship standings, trailing Evans by 49 points as the series looks toward the EKO Acropolis Rally Greece.
