Stars gather for drift exhibition in Tokyo ahead of Japanese Grand Prix

Tokyo hosted a massive gathering of over 500 vehicles on March 21, transforming a warehouse venue into a drift circuit to celebrate the spirit of Japanese motorsport. The event took place just over a week before the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix, highlighting the nation's deep-rooted connection to drifting culture.

Toyota WRC driver Takamoto Katsuta showcased his GR Yaris Rally1 alongside fellow professionals including Yuki Tsunoda, Liam Lawson, Arvid Linblad, Michael 'Mad Mike' Whiddett, and Hiroya Minowa. The exhibition allowed fans to witness the unique contrast between purpose-built drift machines and the four-wheel drive handling of a rally car.

Katsuta noted the distinct mechanical differences, explaining that his rally platform relies on front-wheel pull and high-speed momentum compared to traditional rear-wheel drive drift cars. The event also served as a spotlight for Hiroya Minowa, a rising talent currently participating in the WRC Challenge Program, which previously supported Katsuta’s professional development.
