The 2026 In-Season Challenge returns with a vengeance
The NASCAR Cup Series' In-Season Challenge is back for its second year, turning the summer schedule into a high-stakes, five-race tournament. After an opening round at Sonoma Raceway, the field has been whittled down from 32 drivers to the remaining 16, all fighting for a $1 million prize. The bracket-style format requires drivers to outperform their head-to-head opponent, with the survivor advancing through to the final showdown at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 26.
Round 1 was absolute chaos. In a stunning upset, the No. 1 seed Tyler Reddick suffered a mechanical failure, finishing four laps down and bowing out to No. 32 seed Alex Bowman, who took 10th. Shane van Gisbergen took the win at Sonoma, while the tournament's top-left quadrant saw more bedlam as No. 25 seed Todd Gilliland knocked out No. 8 Daniel Suárez.
Looking ahead to Round 2 at Chicagoland Speedway, we have a massive internal battle brewing at Hendrick Motorsports. Kyle Larson and William Byron, two of the absolute best on intermediate tracks, are set to go head-to-head. Larson arrives with five top-five finishes in his last six races, while Byron is coming off his best performance of the season at Pocono. It is an intense test of pace for Hendrick as they navigate this bracket.
