The strange wings of Monaco

It is absolutely wild to see what teams will do when the rulebook gives them even a tiny bit of breathing room. At last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, the unique demands of the circuit turned the grid into a laboratory of the strange and wonderful. Engineers targeted the narrow, regulation-free zone around the central rear wing, a space usually reserved for Straight Line Mode activators.

Since that system wasn't used in Monaco, teams seized the opportunity to bolt on extra downforce generators. It is a brilliant bit of pragmatism; they simply stopped worrying about the drag penalty that those additions would usually create. In the tight, twisty streets of Monte Carlo, sheer grip matters far more than top-end speed, and the results were truly fascinating to behold.
