Mechanics form the backbone of the FIA World Rally Championship, balancing gruelling travel schedules with the high-stakes pressure of rapid vehicle maintenance. These technical crews are capable of performing complex tasks, such as complete gearbox changes, in mere minutes. For veterans like M-Sport Ford’s chief technician Garry Barker, who has spent over two decades with the team, the role is defined by constant learning and an unwavering commitment to the sport.

Barker’s career highlights include working alongside world champions like Sébastien Loeb and Ott Tänak, but his most notable feat occurred at the 2015 Rally Mexico. Following a severe crash that left Tänak’s Ford Fiesta submerged in a lake for ten hours, the team undertook an extraordinary three-hour repair mission. Utilizing shipping containers and space heaters to dry the car's interior, the crew successfully replaced nearly every component except the engine and wiring loom, allowing Tänak to continue the rally.

Reflecting on the 'miracle of Mexico,' Barker notes that the effort displayed the resilient, never-say-die attitude ingrained in WRC engineering teams. Rivals from other manufacturers watched in disbelief as the car roared to life, underscoring the incredible capabilities of mechanics when faced with near-impossible odds.
