Toto Wolff reacts to the Mercedes rivalry in Montreal

It was truly wild to watch, but Toto Wolff was clearly feeling the pressure during the Canadian Grand Prix. The Mercedes Team Principal saw his drivers, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, going wheel-to-wheel and trading the lead multiple times throughout the early stages of the 68-lap race. Wolff described the internal intensity as "just acceptable," admitting he would have been happier if they had dialed back the aggression by about 10%.

That fierce rivalry, which even spilled over into Saturday’s Sprint, came to a sudden, painful halt on Lap 30. George Russell was forced to retire due to a power unit problem, leaving the door wide open for Kimi Antonelli to charge toward his fourth consecutive Grand Prix victory. Wolff called the final outcome "bittersweet," noting that while the win is a fantastic result for Antonelli, the team ultimately let Russell down.

Now, with Antonelli sitting on a 43-point lead after only five weekends, the mood in the garage needs a reset. Wolff intends to let things calm down and ensure Russell is in a better head space before sitting both drivers down to talk ahead of Monaco. They are committed to being transparent, but after a reliability failure cost them a proper fight to the finish, the priority is clearly to get the team back on stable ground.
