Ty Gibbs fends off Christopher Bell for Iowa triumph in late-race thriller

That, right there, is how you turn a disastrous pit stop into an absolute masterclass. Ty Gibbs took his second victory of the season at the 0.875-mile Iowa Speedway, outfoxing Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell after crew chief Tyler Allen dialed up a brilliant two-tire call on Lap 290 of 350.

Leapfrogging Bell on pit road during the cycle of green-flag stops, Gibbs inherited the lead on Lap 331 and simply refused to break. Bell tried absolutely everything—arcing high, diving to the bottom, and crowding the bumper of the No. 54 Toyota to force an error. But the 23-year-old stood firm, managing a sliding machine to perfection and sealing the deal in front of a packed house.

Here is the wild part: Gibbs had to claw his way back from a blown pit stop at the first stage break that cost him 25 positions. It is his second win of the year following his first career victory at Bristol Motor Speedway in April.

For Bell, it was a bitter pill to swallow, marking the seventh time this season and fourth time in the last five races that he has had to settle for second. Even climbing from 10th to sixth in the NASCAR Cup Series standings offered no real comfort. Pole winner Ryan Blaney came home third after leading the first 93 laps and winning the first stage, while Josh Berry took fourth in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford for his first top five of the season.

Series leader Denny Hamlin had to white-knuckle his way through a brutal afternoon, overcoming a start from the rear and a long brake pedal to finish fifth. Hamlin extended his advantage in the standings to 103 points over Gibbs, who jumped from fourth to second with the win. Chase Briscoe finished sixth, followed by Ross Chastain, AJ Allmendinger, defending race winner William Byron, and Austin Dillon, with rookie Connor Zilisch taking 11th to match his best Cup Series oval result.
