Tyre degradation takes center stage in Barcelona
It is shaping up to be a wild Sunday in Spain. While the 2026 season has been dominated by power unit talk, the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit is stripping that back to the absolute basics: pure, unforgiving tyre management. The heat is intense, with track temperatures hitting 50-52C during Friday practice, triggering thermal decay that teams are only just beginning to map out.
Here is the reality: the degradation is far higher than anyone anticipated, hitting two or three tenths. With Pirelli introducing softer C2, C3, and C4 compounds this year, the old strategy playbooks are effectively shredded. Even Pirelli’s chief engineer, Simone Berra, was surprised to see teams hoarding their hard tyres rather than using them during practice. It seems everyone is trying to blink first.
With similar degradation levels across all three compounds, we are looking at a race that will likely require two or even three pit stops. Drivers like Max Verstappen, Esteban Ocon, and Ollie Bearman have already been feeling out the grip limits, but with the 2026 machines and these specific tyres being a new frontier, the result is anyone's guess. Expect a tactical chess match of lift-and-coast and aggressive stops.
