Unlikely charges and chaotic opening laps shake up IMSA at VIR

Year in and year out, the Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway stands as one of the true crown jewels of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. With its sprawling 1,300 acres of manicured lawns and the demanding 3.27-mile, 17-turn Full Course, the venue feels more like a southern golf paradise than a racetrack. But make no mistake, the stakes are brutal. Holding a traditional late August slot as the opening act of the three-race championship-deciding trilogy, the pressure here is immense, and the margin for error is razor-thin.

Nobody knows that better right now than Pfaff Motorsports and Winward Racing. A few months ago, betting on either of these outfits to figure in their respective championship fights would have looked like a riverboat gambler's folly. Winward's No. 57 Mercedes-AMG GT3 opened its title defence with a Rolex 24 At Daytona win before slumping to ninth or worse in three of the next four races. Meanwhile, Pfaff started their year with a tried-and-true Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 at Daytona before introducing the brand-new Lamborghini Temerario GT3 to worldwide competition at Sebring. Leaving Watkins Glen just three races and not even two full months ago, Winward's Philip Ellis and Russell Ward sat sixth in GTD, 300 points behind Eduardo "Dudu" Barrichello. Pfaff's Andrea Caldarelli and Sandy Mitchell languished seventh in GTD PRO, 210 points back.

Then July and August happened. These two squads have ripped off a combined five wins across Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Road America, and VIR. Winward's hat trick has shoved Ellis and Ward to the top of the GTD standings, now 36 clear of second place. Pfaff's Caldarelli and Mitchell sit third in GTD PRO, merely 56 off the lead. "I think it's just a swing in luck," Russell Ward modestly observed, adding that with two races to go and tight points margins, "you never know what can happen in the next two races." Caldarelli echoed the sentiment, noting that the championship was never even a topic within the team as they wrestled with a brand-new car, but staying positive through every weekend proved that you truly never say never.
