Verstappen reflects on a painful early exit in Monaco
It was supposed to be a beautiful Sunday in Monte Carlo, but for Max Verstappen, the Monaco Grand Prix was over before it really began. The Red Bull driver, who had secured an impressive P2 in Saturday’s qualifying session behind Kimi Antonelli, found his race effectively ruined at the start. After failing to launch off the line, he managed to get the car moving only to limp back to the pits at the end of the opening lap.
Verstappen was left searching for answers as he stood in the media pen, noting that the engine was responding in a "very weird" way during the pre-start. The machine simply refused to find its RPM target and dropped dead upon clutch release. Having only the battery power to crawl forward, he was told to return to the pits slowly to avoid destroying the engine entirely. It is a brutal outcome, marking his second DNF of the season following a similar issue in China.
"After such a nice weekend for us, you’d at least hope to be on the podium," a disappointed Verstappen admitted. The four-time World Champion felt he had the pace to put real pressure on the field, making the walk away with zero points sting that much more. It is a painful reminder that even when a car feels perfect all weekend, the machines we love can break our hearts in an instant.
