Wolff explains Antonelli's progress amidst early doubts

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has highlighted the significant growth of rookie driver Kimi Antonelli, attributing his current championship lead to resilience forged during a difficult debut season. Despite early struggles and external skepticism, Antonelli has emerged as the sport's youngest-ever championship leader.

Wolff noted that Antonelli's youth might contribute to his fearless approach, suggesting the driver feels he has little to lose. He emphasized that the lessons learned from a tough period last year, including a nine-race scoreless streak, have been instrumental in his development. Wolff recounted the numerous doubters who questioned Antonelli's place in the team after a challenging spell, contrasting it with Mercedes' commitment to their long-term project.

"When you need to learn to be resilient and go through the bad spells, alone with the support of your team and family, and you come out of it, it makes you much stronger," Wolff stated. He added that the team maintained its plan, balancing necessary pressure with a degree of ease for the young driver, which he believes has led to their current success.

In contrast, teammate George Russell is facing difficulties, qualifying sixth in Monaco. Wolff suggested that Russell's struggles are not primarily psychological but stem from a lack of confidence in the car and an inability to find grip, making it challenging to recover performance after a difficult start to the weekend.

Looking ahead to the Monaco Grand Prix, Wolff humorously advised Antonelli to "make himself wide like a tourist bus" at the start to defend against Max Verstappen, acknowledging the difficulty of holding position on the tight street circuit.
